A Holistic Approach To Your Child's Ear Infection

Middle ear is connected to the nasal cavity and the throat by means of a passageway called the Eustachian tube. This allows excess secretions from the middle ear to drain away from the ear into the nose and throat. If the Eustachian tube is not draining properly, these secretions build up in the middle ear, with the result that pressure in the ear rises and the ear becomes painful and often infected. In infants the Eustachian tube is oriented more horizontally than vertically, making drainage more difficult than in older children. Most ear infections (Otitis Media) are most common between the ages of 6 months and three years. As a child grows, the Eustachian tube begins to curve downward, allowing fluids to drain more easily. When the chiropractor gently adjusts the child the Eustachian tube is able to drain the ear more efficiently.

The following are the safe and effective herbs use to heal an ear infection:

Echinacea drops: Help to build up the immune system in its fight against infection and preventing new infections from occurring.

Directions: Give your child one dose every two hours, while infection is acute. After symptoms have eased, give your child one dose, three times daily, for one week.

Note: You should not give your child Echinacea on a daily basis for more than two weeks at a time - it may lose its effectiveness.

Garlic and Mullein eardrops: Mullein is a Native American remedy proven to soothe the pain, and reduce the swelling and inflammation. Garlic is used to kill the bacteria in the ear.

Directions: Gently heat Garlic and Mullein drops to slightly above body temperature. With your child lying on his side, put one to two drops into the affected ear. The heat comforts while the Mullein and Garlic go to work.

Warning: Always check temperature of drops before putting in your child's ear.
