Two things cause constipation during pregnancy: hormones and supplements. Hormones are responsible for slowing down the elimination of food. The purpose is to absorb the maximum amount of nutrients from your food. In addition, as the baby grows, the pressure against the inner wall of your intestine increases. Furthermore, if you take iron supplements, it will only act as the problem. Constipation is a common side effect of iron supplements. Just remember to drink plenty of water and eat plenty of fiber.

Here are some tips on how to relieve constipation:

Change Your Diet

Fiber: High fiber foods such as apples, whole grain bread, etc. Fiber promotes regularity.
Natural Laxatives: Consume foods known for their laxative effects such as prunes, prune juice and figs.
Water or Fruit Juice: Drink eight to ten 8-ounce cups of fluid each day. Fluid may be necessary to promote elimination. Furthermore, if you don't drink enough water, it may promote pre-term labor.

Change Your Lifestyle

Walk or join the gym: Make it a habit. Walk about 30 to 60 minutes a day. This can help you speed up the process of elimination thus preventing constipation.

If you have done everything you could to prevent and treat this condition without the use of medication, consult your doctor. He or she could prescribe a stool softener to relieve your constipation. Be happy. It is only a temporary condition.
