Leucorrhea /Leukorrhea (Vaginal Discharge) During Late Pregnancy

All women have some normal discharge in the form of mucous secretions from the cervix and the vagina. This normal vaginal discharge helps to lubricate the vagina and, to some extent, prevent infection. This discharge is most noticeable at the time of ovulation (when an egg is released from the ovary), but it is generally present during the entire menstrual cycle.

Leukorrhea is the medical term for a certain type of vaginal discharge that is common during pregnancy as well as at other times during your reproductive years.During pregnancy, the increased blood flow to the vaginal area may cause an increase in vaginal discharge ;primarily composed of mucus. Also, the tissues lining the vagina become thicker and less sensitive during pregnancy.

Due to hormone changes and increased vaginal discharge, a pregnant woman is more susceptible to yeast infections. Yeast infections are characterized by a thick, whitish discharge from the vagina and itching.Constant leukorrhea, a change in its consistency, or a greater discharge than usual may be signs of a vaginal or uterine infection, a tumor, or various other gynecological disorders.

Talk to your healthcare provider if there is a lot of discharge, you notice a strong or offensive odor, or if accompanied by labial/ vaginal itching or swelling.A colored or bloody discharge may signal possible complications and should be examined immediately.

The discharge is white and curdy, looking something like cottage cheese, and is easily discovered by self-examination. It has a yeast odor.Commonly known as thrush or yeast infection, emissions from candidiasis. The vagina, which is usually pale pink, turns bright red. This redness often spreads to the vulva, which one can see with a mirror.

The discoloration can reach all the way to the anus. It can cause swelling and become very painful. Sometimes the irritation becomes so severe that walking is difficult. Often there are whitish or grayish areas or spots either in the vagina or on the vulva.

You'll probably notice more vaginal discharge as you approach labor, although it's likely to look somewhat different from the flow you've become accustomed to. In very early pregnancy, cervical secretions filled your cervical canal and created a protective barrier — the so-called mucus plug.
As your cervix begins to efface (thin out) and dilate, it may expel this mucus, and you'll notice discharge that looks like egg white or mucus from a runny nose on a cold day. You may even expel the plug in one gelatinous glob. This discharge might be tinged with a bit of blood.

Leukorrhea may or may not indicate the presence of infection, and it is not usually accompanied by other signs and symptoms, such as itching, pain, burning or irritation, or redness, of the tissue. Only a qualified health professional can tell you whether you have an infection. If it is more clear and gelatinous like a thick fertile cervical fluid, that could be the mucus plug.

When you first notice the discharge you can actually do your own sniff test, while calling your doctor. Amniotic fluid has a sweet smell to it, whereas we know that urine smells more like ammonia. Visually, leukorrhea presents as a heavy pale white sticky discharge, while the mucous plug is usually bloodstained. While you are waiting for your physician, do not insert anything into your vagina (no intercourse, bathing or tampons).

You may have to wear sanitary pads if you have a heavy discharge. If the discharge you have is accompanied by a foul smell, or there is irritation or itching around or inside the vagina, then make sure to see you heath care provider.

Recommended treatment during late pregnancy:

During pregnancy physicians recommend vaginal creams and suppositories only. The oral medication, Diflucan (a single-dose medication), has not been proven safe during pregnancy and lactation. If left untreated, yeast infections can pass to your baby's mouth during delivery. This is called "thrush" and is effectively treated with Nystatin.
