Prevent Severe Eyelid Spasm /Blepharospasm by Natural Drinking

Blepharospasm is associated with an abnormal function of the basal ganglion from an unknown cause. The basal ganglion is the part of the brain responsible for controlling the muscles. In rare cases, heredity may play a role in the development of blepharospasm. It happens when your eyelid muscles repeatedly and rhythmically contract. In some instances, the eyelid may repeatedly close (or nearly close) and re-open.It stems from a number of causes, beginning with dry eyes, and, may progress to a state where the person is "legally blind". The blepharospasm referred to here is officially called Benign Essential Blepharospasm (BEB). "Benign" indicates the condition is not life threatening, and "essential" is a medical term meaning "of unknown cause".

Secondary blepharospasm occurs due to some identifiable cause. The most-common cause of secondary blepharospasm is a reaction to antipsychotic medications, and is called tardive dystonia. Damage to the brain, either through stroke, multiple sclerosis, or trauma, may also cause blepharospasm.Neurological condition known as blepharospasm uncontrolled eye blinking that affects 50,000 people in the U.S. and leaves some patients functionally blind.

The three most common types of eyelid spasms are eyelid twitch, essential blepharospasm, and hemifacial spasm.

  1. Eyelid Twitch :The cause of minor eyelid twitching is unknown. A slight spasm of the lower eyelid or even both eyelids is common and of no concern.
  2. Hemifacial Spasm :Hemifacial spasm is a condition which involves the eyelid muscles and usually the muscles around the mouth, but on only one side of the face. Hemifacial spasm is usually caused by an artery pressing on the nerve to the facial muscles causing the face to twitch.
  3. Essential Blepharospasm.

Most people develop blepharospasm without any warning symptoms. It may begin with a gradual increase in blinking or eye irritation. Some people may also experience fatigue, emotional tension, or sensitivity to bright light. As the condition progresses, the symptoms become more frequent, and facial spasms may develop.Delayed effects may be lacrimation, severe conjunctivitis with pain, photophobia, blepharospasm and oedema. Temporary, rarely permanent blindness

Blepharospasm may decrease or cease while a person is sleeping or concentrating on a specific task.Symptoms usually last for a few days then disappear without treatment, but in some cases the twitching is chronic and persistent. Occasionally, the symptoms are severe enough to result in effective blindness.

Patients with blepharospasm have normal eyes. The visual disturbance is due solely to the forced closure of the eyelids.
Blepharospasm should not be confused with:

At present there is no cure for Essential Blepharospasm and related dystonia. Systemic medications help some patients. Debilitating spasms, however, continue in most cases, rendering patients functionally blind. Botulinum toxin type A (Botox) injection ,approved by FDA is the best temporary therapy and myectomy is the best long term therapy.Howover, reduced blinking from injection of the orbicularis muscle can lead to corneal exposure and ulceration.

Recently study suggested that although best known as a cosmetic procedure, Botox injections also have been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat uncontrolled blinking (blepharospasm), lazy eye (strabismus), involuntary muscle contractions in the neck (cervical dystonia) and acute underarm sweating (severe primary axillary hyperhidrosis).Last month, several Floridians were hospitalized with botulism after receiving injections of an anti-wrinkle treatment that authorities suspect was a cheap, non-FDA-approved imitation of Botox.

The botulinum toxin works by invading nerve cells, where it releases an enzyme that prevents muscle contraction. In recent years, scientists have determined that the enzyme binds to specific sites on proteins called SNAREs, which form a complex in the synapse between nerve and muscle cells. Without SNAREs, nerves cannot release the chemical signals that tell muscle cells to contract, and paralysis results.Their results, which will be published in the Dec. 12 online edition of the journal Nature, could help researchers develop alternative treatments for botulism and perhaps find new medical applications for Botox and other neurotoxins.

Sometimes, blinking or pulling the upper eyelid over the lower eyelid may remove a particle from under the eyelid. Avoid rubbing your eye. If you or someone else notices something on the white part of your eye, use a soft tissue or cotton swab to gently lift it out of the eye. Don't try to remove something that is directly over the cornea--this might cause more serious damage.

The cause of blepharospasm is unknown although there are likely genetic factors. Diet, exercise, or similar events cause it. Most often individuals with blepharospasm are seemingly randomly afflicted. It is possible for it to be inherited, but this is rare. Those that are inherited also usually have a generalized dystonia. Blepharospasm is not fatal but is usually a life-long condition.

A daily dose of java may help prevent a form of severe eyelid spasm that can cause a person to become "blind," a new study suggests.

In people with primary late onset blepharospasm, the eyelid muscles contract uncontrollably and cause involuntary blinking. In extreme cases, people are unable to prevent their eyelids from clamping shut and, despite having healthy eyes, they become functionally blind, according to background information in the study.

The new study included 166 Italian patients with primary late onset blepharospasm and two control groups -- 187 people who were relatives of the patients and 228 people with another kind of facial spasm disorder -- who were asked about their coffee consumption.

A team at the University of Bari found that just one to two cups of coffee a day helped protect against late onset blepharospasm and that increased coffee consumption also delayed onset of the condition -- 1.7 years for each additional cup of coffee per day.

The study authors noted that previous research has suggested that caffeine may help prevent Parkinson's disease by blocking adenosine receptors, and the same mechanism may play a role in coffee's protective effect against primary late onset blepharospasm.

"Considering that the caffeine content of a cup of Italian coffee (60-120 milligrams) is similar to the average content of a cup of American coffee (95-125 milligrams), the protective effect on the development of blepharospasm may be exerted at caffeine doses greater than 120-240 milligrams, comparable with the caffeine doses suggested to be protective against Parkinson's disease," the study authors wrote.

Previous studies have suggested that smoking helps protect against blepharospasm, but the authors said they found no evidence to support that theory.
