Perhaps the hardest part of sensible weight management is setting sensible weight management goals. Here are the top ridiculous (but rampant) goals we have all had at one time or the other, and their top sensible (but rare) counterparts:
- Ridiculous: I will become a size 8 (even though I achieved that only once when my first boyfriend dumped me and I couldn't eat for two weeks.) Realistic: I will become healthy by eating according the Food Pyramid 80% of the time, exercising at something I love 4-6 times a week…and I will accept the healthy size at which I land.
- Ridiculous: I can, I WILL, do whatever it takes to lose my weight as quickly as possible, then I can eat what I want again. Realistic: I will find one or two new healthier ways to eat each week that I can enjoy for life and then I will be eating the way I can sustain for good.
- Ridiculous: I'm not happy because I'm heavy, but once I lose this weight, I'll be happy. Realistic: I'll be happy no matter my weight, because I myself am NOT a weight. I am a caring, contributing person growing and improving daily. No one goal, no one person, no one accomplishment is IT. We are whole people with many aspects, weight challenges being one of them.
- Ridiculous: I won't buy any clothes until I reach my weight goal. Realistic: I won't punish myself for something I'm working on improving. I deserve to have pretty clothes NOW and I will make sure I look as attractive as possible no matter my size.
- Ridiculous: There's bound to be "the answer" somewhere; hey, I think I'll try this new diet. Realistic: I already know "the answer" and it is to get committed to gaining my health instead of "losing my weight." I will commit to a lifetime of finding sensible answers like great (and healthy) food and fun activity that create "the answer" for me.
