What changes can you make to help you maintain a healthy weight? Regardless of the fad diets, the best and healthiest way to lose weight is through regular exercise and a sensible diet. A nutritious diet of reasonable portions, rich in whole grains, fruits, vegetables, lean meats, fish and low fat dairy products, will help to keep you lean and healthy. Here are some tips to help you on your way:

- Reduce fat painlessly by substituting skim milk or one percent fat milk for whole milk.
- Remember that calories still count. Replacing high fat food with fat free versions is a good start, but many fat free treats are still laden with calories. No matter whether you're consuming fat or carbohydrate calories, if you consume more than you burn, you'll gain weight.
- When you eat out, plan on bringing home a doggie bag. As soon as your meal arrives, cut the entrée in half and plan on leaving the other half for leftovers.
- Keep a food diary. Each time you eat (even a tiny bite!) mark down the time, what you're eating, and how much. Soon you'll be able to see patterns in your eating habits and become much more conscious of what you eat.
- Try exercise bursts. Health experts tell us that we should exercise at least thirty minutes each day, but the thirty minutes do not have to be all at once. Break it into two fifteen-minute blocks, or three ten-minute blocks (or more!). Try going for a fifteen-minute walk after lunch, after work, and after dinner.
- Simple lifestyle changes can make a difference. Try taking the stairs instead of the escalator at the mall. Park a block or two further away. Instead of emailing or calling the coworker down the hall, take a break and walk over.
