Candidiasis is the second most common cause of vaginal irritation or vaginitis, and can also occur on the male genitals, particularly in uncircumcised men.Yeast organisms are always present in all people, but are usually prevented from "overgrowth" (uncontrolled multiplication resulting in symptoms) by naturally occurring microorganisms.

Yeast infections is a naturally occurring fungus called Candida albicans (C. albicans) usually causes this type of vaginitis. At least three quarters of all women will experience candidiasis at some point in their lives. The Candida albicans organism is found in the vaginas of almost all women and normally causes no problems. However, when it gets out of balance with the other "normal flora," such as lactobacilli (which can also be harmed by using douches), an overgrowth and symptoms can result. Pregnancy, the use of oral contraceptives, engaging in vaginal sex after anal sex in an unhygenic manner, and using lubricants with glycerine have been known to be causally related to yeast infections. Also, antibiotics, and diabetes mellitus can lead to an increased incidence in yeast infections.
The acidic environment of the vagina helps keep yeast from growing. If the vagina becomes less acidic, too many yeast can grow and cause a vaginal infection.
The acidic balance of the vagina can be changed by your period (menstruation), pregnancy, diabetes, some antibiotics, birth control pills and steroids. Moisture and irritation of the vagina also seem to encourage yeast to grow. The symptoms of a yeast infection are also the symptoms of other infections, such as some STDs.
Good hygiene may prevent some types of vaginitis from recurring and may relieve some symptoms.
Here are suggestions to prevent these infections:
- Avoid baths, hot tubs and whirlpool spas. Rinse soap from your outer genital area after a shower, and dry the area well to prevent irritation. Don't use scented or harsh soaps, such as those with deodorant or antibacterial action.
- Avoid irritants. These include scented tampons or pads.
- Avoid underwear and pants that are made of synthetic fibers. Stick to all-cotton underwear.
- Wear loose-fitting clothing.
- Avoid wearing pantyhose daily.
- Remove wet swimsuits, clothing, or underwear immediately.
- Use your blow dryer on a low, cool setting to help dry your genital area after you bathe or shower and before getting dressed.
- Wipe from front to back after using the toilet. This may help prevent the bacteria that normally live in your rectum from getting into your vagina.
- Change out of wet swimsuits or other damp clothes as soon as you can.
- Avoid artificially fragranced or colored products such as sprays, tampons, pads, douches, or bubble baths, as they can affect the area's acid balance, which can promote symptoms of a yeast infection.
- Cranberry juice and yogurt are two foods that may help prevent the occurrence of yeast infections and aid in their treatment.
- A number of natural products purport to prevent or cure vaginal yeast infections — a form of vaginitis — without prescription medication. Some popular home remedies include vinegar douches, tea tree oil cream and vaginal suppositories made with garlic or boric acid.
- Self-treatment may be initiated with over-the-counter vaginal creams such as miconazole or clotrimazole. Persistent symptoms should be evaluated by your gynecologist or primary health care provider.
- Candidiasis is alleged to be successfully treated either with home remedies or, in the case of a more severe infection, with either over-the-counter substances or prescription antifungal medications. Home remedies for candidiasis include the consumption or direct application of yogurt, which contains lactobacillu(probiotics, "friendly" bacteria that kill yeast), acidophilus tablets or salves, and even lightly crushed cloves of garlic, which yield allicin, an antifungal. Boric acid has also been used to treat yeast infections when gelcaps are filled with boric acid powder and two are inserted at bedtime for three to four nights.
- To ease discomfort until the antifungal medication takes full effect, apply a cold compress, such as a washcloth, to the labial area.
